Specter: The right thing to do

Posted by ALEJANDRO HONEKER on Wednesday, April 29, 2009,

In a shocking move, Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) announced on Tuesday his decision to switch parties and become a Democrat. Specter said he found himself "increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy." One of the last moderate Republicans left in the Senate and in the Northeast, Senator Specter affirmed he was not willing to let the Republican primary electorate --which, after a massive diaspora of moderates to the Democratic Party, has become a minority of right-wing conservatives-- d...

UK Lib Dems proposing £700 tax cut

Posted by Alejandro Honeker on Monday, April 20, 2009,

The UK Lib Dems announced today that, if elected, they will cut the amount of income tax paid by lower and middle-income individuals by £700 a year. Overall, the plan does not represent a net tax cut but a 'tax switch', being funded by closing loopholes for companies and slightly increasing taxes on wealthier individuals.

Bigotry's last stand

Posted by Alejandro Honeker on Sunday, April 19, 2009,
The anti-gay marriage TV ad titled "Gathering Storm," produced by the so-called "National Organization for Marriage," shows the level of desperation the far right is having after the victory of the marriage equality movement in Iowa and Vermont. The far right has ran out of arguments to oppose same-sex marriage (not that they ever had any) and has adopted plain bigotry to stop equal rights for everybody.
Watch the ad and look for yourself.

As you may expect, it didn't take too long for h...

'Teabagging' = 'Insanitea'

Posted by Alejandro Honeker on Tuesday, April 14, 2009,

Conservatives and Republicans are organizing "Tea Parties" across the country and sending tea bags to members of Congress to protest against "President Obama's tax increases" and government spending. No wonder it was them the ones who created the current massive deficit. But the funny thing about this "teabagging" idea is the notion behind it. These right-wing extremists believe that the Federal Reserve should be eliminated! They also seem to hate taxes just for the sake of hating taxes. Th...

The need for a strong NATO

Posted by Alejandro Honeker on Saturday, April 4, 2009,

Vivienne Walt has an article on Time.com about the uncertain future of NATO, the Euro-American defense alliance born 60 years ago to prevent Soviet expansionism into Europe. Walt argues that the organization's purpose is cloudy and uncertain. You can read the article @ time.com

realLibs | OPINION   While it is true that the threat for which NATO was born no longer exists, we believe NATO can continue playing an important role in keeping peace and stopping violations to essential human rig...

Marriage equality in Iowa

Posted by Alejandro Honeker on Friday, April 3, 2009,
Today, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage passed a decade ago by the state legislature violates the notion of equal protection under the law and, therefore, is unconstitutional. With this decision, Iowa becomes the third state in the nation (after Massachusetts and Connecticut), but, most importantly, the first mid-western state to legalize same-sex civil marriages. This is a very important victory for gay rights activists in a not necessarily liberal s...
