On the decadence of Anglo conservatism and the vote on same-sex marriage in Germany

July 3, 2017

Anglo conservatism is in shambles. The UK Conservatives have lost their majority after pushing for an extreme hard Brexit and the party is totally divided on how to approach the issue; the US Republicans have turned into a populist-nationalist movement led by a third world-style egomaniac; the Canadian Conservatives are in the wilderness; and the Australian Liberal Party is controlled by right-wing fanatics who have made the moderate PM's life impossible. Perhaps this state of disarray has led them to spit bile at the most successful, non-Anglo centrist-conservative leader in decades, Angela Merkel. Many Anglo cons have criticized Merkel for her vote against same-sex marriage on Friday. Perhaps they should be reminded that none of them have been champions of LGBT rights (except, a segment of the UK Tories under former PM Cameron). The US Republicans are appalling on the issue; the Canadian conservatives have accepted equal marriage as they have no choice; and the Aussie Libs are still blocking any change on the legislation, making Australia one of the last Western countries without the freedom to marry. It's pathetic for them then to criticize Merkel on this issue. They hate her for her openness and compassion during the refugee crisis, which none of them showed even remotely.

No, I don't agree with Merkel's vote against same-sex marriage. But I'm smart enough to see beyond this single vote and appreciate her leadership standing up for liberal values in the world at a time when Anglo conservatives retreat into populist demagoguery and scapegoating of everything foreign.

To Anglo conservatives I say this: once you embrace and stop scapegoating those who are escaping from civil war, then dare to criticize Merkel on gay marriage. Before that, you have no moral authority. As for Merkel, I still trust her to lead the free world.

The graph above shows the support for equal marriage among the German political parties. Congratulations to Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen and CDU's Secretary General Peter Tauber, among 68 other CDU MPs, for standing up for equality under the law. They are the future of the party. And congratulations to the BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN, for being the first ones to push for this legislation. The freedom to marry is now the law of the land in Germany.

An it-is-what-it-is election

UK general election endorsement

On Thursday, Britain will go to the polls to choose a new Parliament and – perhaps – Prime Minister and government. After the disastrous vote to exit the European Union last year – which, in my view, infused life into the populist campaign of Donald Trump in America and to nationalist populism across the West –, Britons find themselves having to choose among two prime ministerial candidates and parties who...

We choose Macron.

Our endorsement for the French presidential election
On Sunday, France's choice goes beyond a president. It is a choice between openness, freedom, liberal democracy, and an embrace of authoritarianism and isolation, whether in its far-right or far-left disguise.

We believe only one candidate stands up for the values of openness, globalization and economic and social liberty. That candidate is Emmanuel Macron. We urge the French people to choose Mr. Macron as their next president. For France...

My endorsement for the U.S. presidential election

After almost two years of one of the most vicious and policy-absent campaigns in American history, Election Day is finally – almost – here. Americans will have the final say over who they believe should be their next commander-in-chief and head of the Executive branch: former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or businessman and reality TV star Donald Trump. While in the past, American presidential elections have usually been contests ...

Theresa May for Prime Minister

Our endorsement for the Conservative leadership contest

A few months ago, if anyone had given us the current crop of Conservative leadership candidates and asked us what our preference was, it would have been unthinkable for us not to answer –rather enthusiastically– that our option was Michael Gove. A mostly classical liberal Tory, thinker and reformer, Mr. Gove would have been our choice without question. But everything has changed after Britain voted to leave the European Union, an...

We vote for a more liberal Liberal Party

July 1, 2016

Our endorsement for the Australian general election

Australians go to the polls on Saturday to choose a new Parliament and to decide whether Liberal Malcolm Turnbull remains Primer Minister or Labor’s Bill Shorten moves into The Lodge. Even though Australia is a parliamentary democracy and voters choose Members of Parliament and Senators rather than a Prime Minister directly, our endorsement decision on which party or parties to support is based on who will end up being Prime Minister. ...

After Brexit, we hope stability triumphs in Spain

June 25, 2016
Our view on the Spanish general election

Spaniards will choose a new Parliament tomorrow after months of gridlock resulting in no government. After the decision of a majority of British voters to become the first country to exit the European Union, the worst thing that could happen to Europe and the Western liberal order is another win for anti-globalization forces, this time in Spain. There is no doubt that the hard-left alliance Podemos is an enemy of the values we believe in: individual fr...

Our endorsement for the EU referendum in Britain

On Thursday, Britons will go to the polls to make the most important decision in a generation: whether to remain in the European Union or to leave the 28-member club. Much has been said by both camps during the last few months, but we strongly believe that the facts –both on the economic argument and the security argument– are clearly on one side: the Remain camp.

On the economic front, it is clear that the overwhelming majority of organ...

Decision time in America

February 1, 2016

Our endorsement for the Republican and Democratic presidential nominations

Americans begin the process to choose their new president on Monday with the much-publicized Iowa caucuses. It’s hard not to feel disheartened and anxious when we observe that the two candidates garnering the most traction and enthusiasm in rallies are a narcissistic megalomaniac whose entire campaign is built on xenophobia and chauvinism, and a self-described socialist who is campaigning on a message of class ...

The time for radical centrism has come

Our endorsement for Spain’s general election

Spanish citizens go to the polls on Sunday to choose a new Parliament in a much better economic environment than when they last voted four years ago. The economy is growing at 3% and unemployment is falling, although slowly. Yet no one expects any party to win an overall majority. Most polls show the governing conservative Popular Party of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy slightly ahead, while the race for the second place is unclear.

While we bel...
