On the decadence of Anglo conservatism and the vote on same-sex marriage in Germany

Posted by A.H. on Monday, July 3, 2017,

Anglo conservatism is in shambles. The UK Conservatives have lost their majority after pushing for an extreme hard Brexit and the party is totally divided on how to approach the issue; the US Republicans have turned into a populist-nationalist movement led by a third world-style egomaniac; the Canadian Conservatives are in the wilderness; and the Australian Liberal Party is controlled by right-wing fanatics who have made the moderate PM's life impossible. Perhaps this state of disarray has le...

Choose freedom in Denmark

Our endorsement for the Danish general election

Danes go the polls on Thursday to choose a new parliament and decide if they give Helle Thorning-Schmidt another mandate as Prime Minister. Irrespective of which major party comes on top and is able to form a stable government --whether Ms. Thorning-Schmidt's center-left Social Democrats or Lars Lokke Rasmussen's center-right Venstre--, we believe the Danish parliament would do well having a strong dose of classical liberalism in it.

During the p...

Our endorsement for the UK general election

After five years of a coalition government that many thought was not going to last much in office, Britain is going to the polls on Thursday to decide whether Prime Minister David Cameron will get a chance to continue in power –either alone or in a continued coalition– or not. It seems all but certain that the country will have its second hung parliament in a row, an astonishing sea change in British politics, which used to be dominated by a Co...

An easy choice in Sweden

Our endorsement for the Swedish general election

Swedes go to the polls tomorrow to choose a new Parliament. After eight years in power, the liberal center-right Alliance (Alliansen) is in danger of being thrown out of power by the Social Democrats and their leftist allies. This would be a regrettable outcome for one of the world's success stories of the last decade.

Looking at Sweden's record during the last eight years, one could argue --especially from a liberal perspective-- that that i...

Two freedom fighters said goodbye in 2013

Posted by A.H. on Tuesday, December 31, 2013,

(And those who think it’s impossible to praise them both at the same time are just plain hypocrites)

Twenty thirteen is leaving us behind but before we say goodbye, it’s time to remember the two giants that went away during it. Perhaps two of the most influential political leaders of the twentieth century and certainly two of the most influential freedom fighters the world has ever known left us during this year: Margaret Thatcher and Nelson Mandela. Some will say it’s impossible to co...

Our final tribute to a freedom fighter

Margaret Thatcher | 1925-2013

This is our final tribute to the Iron Lady. Her passion for individual freedom and her determination to carry out her vision will continue to inspire our political philosophy. Like the people of Eastern Europe whose liberation from totalitarianism she helped to accomplish, we say thank you.

"The full accounting of how my political work affected the lives of others is something we will only know on Judgement Day. It is an awesome and unsettling thought....

An historic opportunity to bury fascism in the Americas

Our endorsement for the Venezuelan presidential election

Venezuelans go to the polls on Sunday to choose between six more years of ‘chavismo’ or a new beginning. After years of non-competitive presidential elections since Hugo Chávez came to power, this is the first time an opposition candidate has a real chance to defeat the South American autocrat and his authoritarian regime. Chávez’s challenger, Henrique Capriles Radonski, was selected as the presidential candidate of the Demo...

Bigotry's last stand

Posted by A.H. on Sunday, April 19, 2009,
The anti-gay marriage TV ad titled "Gathering Storm," produced by the so-called "National Organization for Marriage," shows the level of desperation the far right is having after the victory of the marriage equality movement in Iowa and Vermont. The far right has ran out of arguments to oppose same-sex marriage (not that they ever had any) and has adopted plain bigotry to stop equal rights for everybody.
Watch the ad and look for yourself.

As you may expect, it didn't take too long for hun...

Marriage equality in Iowa

Posted by A.H. on Friday, April 3, 2009,
Today, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage passed a decade ago by the state legislature violates the notion of equal protection under the law and, therefore, is unconstitutional. With this decision, Iowa becomes the third state in the nation (after Massachusetts and Connecticut), but, most importantly, the first mid-western state to legalize same-sex civil marriages. This is a very important victory for gay rights activists in a not necessarily liberal s...
