The overwhelming majority of scientists have expressed serious concerns about the state of our planet. According to them, global climate change is already originating innumerable natural disasters across the world –disasters that threaten our quality of life and our future. We have a responsibility to take care of our environment and to make sure we help create new technologies and sources of energy to lead us to a more sustainable economic system. To deny this fact is unreasonable and unscientific. We have the opportunity to lead our country and the world toward a new era of economic growth and environmental responsibility at the same time. To fulfill this, we should:

  • create incentives for families, individuals and businesses to go green;
  • promote energy efficiency;
  • provide incentives to businesses that invest in renewables;
  • start the transformation of our energy system into a cleaner and more sustainable one;
  • adopt a system that caps the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are released into the atmosphere; we can do this through the implementation of a carbon tax. We believe a carbon tax is a more transparent and effective way to reduce carbon emissions than a cap-and-trade system. Also, by implementing a carbon tax, we could cut income and corporate taxes and help stimulate the economy.

Denying the problem will not make us any good. Facing it will create innumerable opportunities. The time to act is now. We have nothing to lose and much to gain.
